On January 1, 2014, in keeping with a law passed by Congress in 2007, the old familiar tungsten-filament 40- and 60-watt incandescent light bulbs can no longer be manufactured in the U.S., because they don’t meet federal energy-efficiency standards. This is the last part of a gradual phase-out that began in 2012 with 100-watt bulbs, and progressed last year with discontinuation of the 75-watt variety. The older incandescent bulbs are being replaced with one of the newer lighting technologies, CFLs and LEDs.

While these newer technologies are more efficient energy-wise, they don't offer the light output as the incandescent bulbs produced. For example, a 100-watt incandescent bulb produced 1750 lumens or 137 foot-candles. The newer CFL 23-watt, produces only 1600 lumens or 125 foot-candles. That's a difference of 150 lumens or if you have a fixture with two bulbs, 300 lumens of light missing in your room. This may put you under the minimum requirment of foot-candles in your home and compromise your lighting.
